Found among grand-dad’s effects. He lived near Houston, Texas, so not surprising he’d have a WWI helmet from the Texas-mustered 5th Infantry Division, indicated by the red diamond symbol at front (the “red devils” as the Germans knew them). You can read that the 5th Infantry was the 8th of 42 American divisions dispatched to the Western Front in WWI. The two white bars across the top likely indicated the captain’s rank of the original owner. Inside of helmet stamped ZD 179. Sold with the WWI-vintage leather leggings that were packed with the helmet.
