To my bidders: For years I have done business on eBay using the name: gpstorageco*. The items I will be selling from this point on are being sold from my estate and from the estates of friends and relatives.
This WWI US Cape Style Leather Flight Helmet belonged to a friend of mine who recently passed away. He set aside quality vintage military items over the years and this was one of the cornerstones of his WWI aviation collection. It remains as found and I know he purchased it in the mid 1970's direct from the WWI Veteran estate of Frederick R. Bolton.
This WWI US Cape Style Leather Flight Helmet is as found in my friends estate lot. It is super clean/solid overall and shows light/average period use/wear (see photos). The helmet is made of quality leather and the exterior is a deep rich caramel colored brown (see photos). The leather covered crash style protective crown is excellent and a supple flowing leather cape is attached with snaps just below the leather neck closure strap (see photos). Sewn leather ear shields that cover the hearing mesh to each side remain securely attached. There is a leather chinstrap with metal buckle that attaches to each side of the helmet just below the ear openings. Both the neck closure and chinstrap are very solid with no issues (see photos). The front has a period painted three color roundel just above the face opening and the aviator has etched his name (Bolton) to the helmet crown & penned it to the cape just below the makers mark (see photos). The interior of the helmet & cape are lined with a brown corduroy material and there is a small 7 1/4 paper size tag remaining in the neck area (see photos). A makers trademark is present to the cape & shows the manufacturer as D&M (Draper & Maynard - see photos). One female snap cover is missing to the cape's lower point (see photos). All components of this helmet are period original - WWI (see photos).
Frederick R. Bolton was a Detroit lawyer and educator who served as a Navy officer in both World Wars. He was a USN Ensign in World War I and a USN Commander in World War II. During WWI Ensign Bolton trained as an aviator at Dunwoody Technological Institute, Minnesota and Miami & Key West, Florida. In 1940 Mr. Bolton was elected National Chief Justice of the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. He served on the staff of the Detroit Board of Education in an administrative capacity. Prior to WWI Mr. Bolton worked as an engineer for Ford Motor Company before entering the US Navy in 1917. After the WWI he attended Detroit College of Law, graduating in 1921 and organized his own law firm in 1925. In 1962 Mr. Bolton was elected national president of the Judge Advocates Association, an affiliate of the American Bar Association. Frederick R. Bolton died in Detroit on May 8, 1973.
Really a superb WWI US Cape Style Leather Flight Helmet. Great opportunity for the WWI aviation gear collector. I have never seen a better example.
