Description
A unique toleware metal box made to house a pair of Royal Navy shoulder epaulettes and a Bitcorn hat from World War One. The box is registered as you will see in the picture, with the brass registration attached to the top of the box. The slide opener works well. There are many chips in the toleware but no dents. The inside of the box is a purple fabric. There is some glue work needed as seen in the pictures. This box measures approximately 18" long by 9" wide and 9" tall. The Bitcorn hat is black with a grosgrain flat black bow with a twisted fine gold wire and decorative button going down the one side of the hat. On each end of the hat has additional gold metal coils and a beautiful braided gold piece. One end is near perfect and the other end needs some work (although the wire/thread is there). Each side of the hat has a bit of wear. As old as this is, I think the structure of the hat as well as the decoration is in very good shape. The interior of the hat has a pleated beige fabric with the label of the maker. It is made by Gieves Limited By Special Appointment to His Majesty The King. This company is famous for its custom work. The brown leather band inside the hat is in perfect condition.
The pair of gold epaulettes are in excellent condition. Each one has a button and an anchor on the gold fabric. The trim is flawless with no stains or damage. Attached to the back of each epaulette is a brass piece to attach to the shoulder. One brass piece is labeled with "LEFT" and the other "RIGHT". Both are also created by Gieves Limited and has the label embossed on the black leather. Each measure approximately 7" long and 5" at the widest point.
