    Description

This is an original WWI, 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" darkened bronze U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Officer's uniform cap insignia.  These were worn on an Army officer's visor cap.  During WWI, Public Health Service officer's worked closely with the military services.  The emblem is finely struck in bronze, is very high quality and three dimensional, with fine feathering on the eagle.  It is in excellent condition, with 100% of the darkened finish remaining.  It depicts a spread eagle over an American shield, with a medical caduceus and anchor with chain, crossed behind the shield.  The reverse has two centering points above a screw post, with the original round nut.  There is a small rectangular brass maker's label on the right wing with, "J R Gaunt, New York, Made In England."  Please see my other auctions for more items from my 60+ year military collection.
