Stunning Condition Private Purchase WWI M1911 Campaign Hat
For sale is an original private purchase WWI M1911 Campaign (Montana) Hat by the Frank Schoble Company. The sweatband is embossed on the left side with the
Frank Schoble
Co.
"Shield" trademark logo, and Alex Rige, Montgomery Alabama.
The hat is in excellent original condition with slight signs of use and some degradation from age.  Overall, it retains excellent shape and form with no significant drawbacks.  This campaign hat includes the original leather retaining strap, which is still intact and very supple with a working buckle. The sweatband is in excellent condition, with fully intact stitching.  Lastly, the hat includes a set of chords which I believe are either enlisted engineer or enlisted ordnance.

The Hat, Service, M1911 (Campaign Hat) was made of OD wool felt with a wide brim and "Montana peak" crown. There are ventilation holes in the crown with grommets, a silk hatband, and a silk and braid cord closed by a knot and terminated with a tassel. Inside was a leather sweatband and an attached chin strap. The Army model was dark brown OD in color.
The hat cords were worn around the base of the crown indicated the branch for enlisted men and rank for officers. The system was similar to the piping colors for the Garrison Cap, copied from the Campaign Hat. Unit and rank insignia were sometimes worn on the front of the hat when authorized.
