Nice, honest example of the World War I era Merchant Marine flat hat, of the same design as used by the US Navy during the First World War. This example has its original hat tally for the U.S.M.M. (United States Merchant Marine), but as you can see the letters have become difficult to read with age. The leather sweatband is complete and intact, and has the sailor's initials present. The Merchant Marine played a vital role in protecting our merchant fleets crossing the Atlantic from German U-Boats.
The hat remains in fair-good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. There are a few moth holes present, as well as a little stiffening to the sweatband, but overall it displays quite well.
