    Description

    Antique Wood & Son, England, CHAIN OF STATES Martha Washington Plate.  It measures 8 7/8" diameter.  There are 15 state names listed in the chain. The states listed are those that were part of the union in 1796.  This particular pattern was made beginning in 1896.  Many of the pieces available today were given away as premiums from American companies for purchases.  Very few of the pieces are marked Wood & Son, which began making them in 1896.
    The initials MW stand for Martha Washington. These Flow Blue copies are based on an original brown 1796 Cantonese tea set given to Mrs Washington by Andreaus EveradusVon Braum Houckgeest. He was the the former head of the Dutch East India Company and was very impressed with American democracy. The inscription is Latin and literally translates "Honor and the Defense of it". The flow Blue copies were first made for the American market on the 100th anniversary of the original gift. The presence of gilding in the pattern indicates that it dates to after 1902.  There are no chips, cracks, or breaks.
    Most of the items that I sell are antique or vintage as as such they do show signs of patina, use, and age.  That only adds to the character that so many collectors desire.  If there are any major issues or defects, I try to describe them to the best of my ability and as accurately as possible.  In the event that I do miss something with words, I provide you with plenty of pictures to be included as part of the description.
