Up for sale is the original W.W. I. U.S. Army Doughboy Helmet, 78
th
Lightning Division. The 78
th
Division was activated on August 23, 1917 at Camp Dix, New Jersey. See picture of 78th Division history. The Model M1917 helmet has the liner and chin strap in very good condition. The soldier’s name, rank and serial number – Sgt. Laroy M. Merrill, 123501 are stamped on inside rim. (Sgt. Laroy M. Merrill’s record of enlistment can be found on Ancestry.com.

VT Infantry.) Also, on the inside rim is stamped the number ZF31 indicating the helmet was manufactured in the United Stated. The helmet has sand finish. This helmet is in really good shape including the Lightning Bolt insignia painted on the front. See photos for the condition.
