?This is an ORIGINAL British-made "overseas cap" of the "Glengarry" type, as worn by Doughboys during WWI.  The Glengarry-style cap had earflaps which were folded up when not in use and secured by two buttons, in this case by officer style two-piece brass buttons, not bronze buttons, as would typically be the case.   Perhaps this was a later edition to the cap, which continued to be worn by the Air Service/Air Corps after WWI.
During WWI, the green and black piping above the buttoned front of this cap would have indicated the individual was assigned to the newly created Air Service, which previously had been called the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps. In addition, the cap has a bullion thread "winged prop" insigne sewn on to the right front of the cap. The absence of rank insignia on the left curtain indicates that the individual was an enlisted pilot or observer.
Fortunately, I recently found the picture of the airmen who wore this cap, "Sgt. 1st Class E.G. Zimmerman", which for years had been hanging on a wall with other WWI photographs (See images of photo and note on the back).
Zimmerman wrote his initials ("EGZ") on the lining (see image below),  So, Zimmerman and his WWI service may be researchable on Ancestry.com or one of the other veterans research services. The photo is in a beautiful period frame with a military motif molding.
The cap is made of brown heavy cavalry twill fabric.  The brown color is strong and unfaded and best seen in the non-flash images. The cap is in very good condition, aside from the sweatband becoming unsewn at two points inside and quite a bit of soiling on the lining. The cap is a size 7-1/8 to 7-1/4 or about 21.5-22" in circumference.  The curtains of the cap are held up by two small snaps on either side at the point where the curtain becomes horizontal (see image below).
