Matagorda Co., TX, located on the Gulf of Mexico, is one of the older counties in the State.  When the county was established in 1836 the name “matagorda” came from the Spanish word for “thick brush” because of the canebrakes that line the shore.  In this volume, you will get a brief history of the county and the area around the county followed by a series of biographical sketches of early families in the county.
