HESTER BATEMAN ANTIQUE GEORGIAN SILVER SUGAR BASKET - 1789 - from Estate
This is a lovely and important Georgian sterling silver sugar basket made by Hester Bateman and hallmarked in London 1789.
It is in very good condition and retains the original gilding to the interior. Standing on a raised oval base the body is engraved with a framed oval design--no initials--and complex banded decorations to the upper and lower rims. The hallmarks are very clearly struck. The swing handle is firmly fixed and has a reeded decoration.
Hester Bateman was the matriarch of the family and her sons continued the business after her death. Regarded as one of the foremost lady silversmiths of the Georgian period her pieces are widely sought after.

This lovely basket comes from the private estate of the popular local jeweler Stanley Minkinow, who displayed it for years in his home. Mr. Minkinow was a Polish Holocaust survivor and a WW2 refugee who joined the American Army to gain a path to citizenship. He turned the army into his first career, rising to the rank of Major, becoming a member of the elite 10th Special Forces Group and later, an aviator who served two years' of combat during the Vietnam War.
The sale of this item will contribute to Stanley's charitable bequeaths.
