A fairly scarce little hand blown miniature Torrey & Co sample whiskey bottle from the 1890s pre prohibition era.....

Hand blown in mold.....smooth sheared lip....amber....round with almost a lady's leg neck.....amber....only 4 3/4"tall....Excellent condition with only one shallow flake on top surface of lip; no other damage. A tiny bit of faint inside haze. This bottle has an interesting story. It seems that there were two Mt.Vernon Rye Whiskey distilleries competing with each other....both located in Baltimore. The original Mt.Vernon Pure Rye Whiskey was bottle in unique square bottles by Hannis Distilling Co in the 1880s. Henry Hannis, the originator of the brand went crazy and died in an insane asylum in 1886. The Mt.Vernon Whiskey brand name was sold to Cook & Bernheimer of New York. Torrey & Son Distillery of Boston were ticked off that they didnt get the brand name so they just opened their own Mt.Vernon Distilling Co in Baltimore to compete with Cook & Bernheimer who took over the old Hannis Distillery in Baltimore. Both companies claimed to sell the original Mt.Vernon Rye Whiskey...but in the end both distilleries went out of business by 1917 before Prohibition began. I'm not sure if this Torrey mini sample bottle is from Boston or Baltimore?...
