1850s FIGURAL MAN ON BARREL POTTERY WHISKEY FLASK LIQUOR BOTTLE

Here's an early figural man on barrel whiskey bottle most likely made in Ohio in the 1850s. This flask has a barrel which has the number

emb on it.....shaped like a smiling man sitting on a barrel and holding a mug of liquor in each hand.....Brown glazed pottery bottle.....single ring cork top collar.....8 1/4"tall....A small shallow chip on very bottom; no other damage. A nice clean flask.
There are three other nearly identical examples of this bottle that were probably made by the same pottery; one is embossed JIM CROWN....another is emb ALE FOR JAMES CROW and the other J.SMITH MORMON PROPHET 1830. Jim Crow refers to the very popular song and dance from 1828, "Jump Jim Crow" which was supposedly inspired by the song and dance of a crippled slave named Jim Crow. Three cities claim Jim Crow as there own; Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and St. Louis. Since many Mormons settled around Kirtland,Ohio in 1831, it is very possible the Mormon Prophet flask as well as the other similar examples were all made at the East Liverpool,Ohio pottery around that same period in the early 1830s up to the 1850s. It is shaped similar to British Reform flasks, also made in the 1830s...
