Braxton County, Virginia now West Virginia, was created in 1836 from parts of Lewis, Kanawha and Nicholas Counties and is located in the center of the state. It was named in honor of Carter Braxton, a Virginia statesman and signer of the Declaration of Independence. This 1840 census list the heads of household only with the numbers of sex and gender of the others in that household. Also given is the occupation, personal information such as blind, deaf, etc. as well as the name and age of those receiving a pension from the military. Schools and academies are given with the number of scholars and also the number of those at public charge. The original was given in a somewhat alphabetical listing for ease of reading.
